Enjoy the Golden pavillion

Kinkakuji, the Golden Pavillion representing the exquisite beauty of the old capital, Kyoto.

A buddhist temple school from Rinzai-Shokoku-ji sect. assigned as one of Cultural Heritages of the old capital Kyoto by UNESCO in 1994.
The outer part of the building is covered by gold foil, earning its name as the Golden Pavillion.
A popular sightseeing spot, even among locals, boasting over 5 millions visitors annually.

■ Information about Kinkakuji

Name: Kinkakuji (Rokuonji)
Year Build: 1397 (year Oei 4)
Address: 1 Kinkakujicho, Kita-ku, Kyoto, Kyoto.

Business day(s): All year round
Business hour(s): 9:00~17:00
Fee: High-school and above ¥400, Middle-Elementary grade ¥300

  • Point.01

    Feel the golden brilliance.

Ashikaga Yoshimichi built the pavillion covered in gold foil to exude some sense of prestige and authority, but there is also interpretation that the gold color depicts the Pure Land of Buddha/ Heaven.

  • Point.02

    The beauty of Japanese tradition.

The three-storied Golden Pavillion was originally built as a mountain retreat home for Ashikaga Yoshimichi, which then transformed into a temple school. The garden surrounding the pavillion was said to further support the theory that the place was built to depict the pure land of Buddha/ Heaven, which serves as a representation of Kitayama (an area in the northern part of Kyoto) culture from the Muromachi period, during most of the reign of Ashikaga shogunate.

  • Point.03

    A place for healing.

Kinkakuji presents the best of each season: cherry blossom in spring, crimson maple leaves around the relic hall and the pond, and the thin blanket of snow covering the area in winter gives visitor a peace of mind at any time of the year.
