Enjoy Kinkaku-jiEnjoy Kinkakuji Temple

The ancient capital of Kyoto, a symbol of Japanese culture,
The golden temple "Kinkaku-ji".

This temple is of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism and was registered as a component part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) "Cultural Monuments of Ancient Kyoto" in 1994.
It is also called Kinkaku-ji Temple because the inside and outside of the building are covered in gold leaf.
It is a popular tourist destination in Kyoto City, with over 5 million visitors per year.

■ Basic information about Kinkakuji Temple

  • Point.01

    Experience the golden glow

There is a theory that the reason why Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, who built Kinkaku-ji Temple, covered the exterior of the temple in gold leaf was to show off his authority and power, or to represent the Pure Land.

  • Point.02

Enjoy the traditional beauty of Japan

Kinkakuji is a three-story building covered in gold leaf inside and out, which was originally a mountain villa of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu and was converted into a temple after his death. The garden and architecture centered around Kinkakuji are said to represent the Pure Land, and are considered to symbolize the Kitayama culture of the early Muromachi period.

  • Point.03

A place to relax whenever you visit

Kinkakuji Temple looks different in each season. You can relax and unwind whenever you visit, whether it's the cherry blossoms in spring, the colorful foliage decorating the Shariden Hall and Kyokochi Pond in autumn, or the fantastic snow-covered scenery in winter.
