FOOD REPLICAS

Food replicas originated in Japan in the 1920s, with Takizo Iwasaki creating wax tempura in 1926--the start of commercial food samples.
They were first used in department store restaurants to make menus easier to understand for those unfamiliar with foreign cuisine.
While materials later shifted from wax to plastic, a wax food replica workshop offers a rare chance to experience this traditional and precious craft.

Hotel staff comments

At Kotokoto+ in Kyoto, the only place to try traditional wax food replicas! Make lifelike tempura and lettuce--fun even for adults.
Inside the shop, you'll find a wide variety of food sample goods, and here you can actually see and touch items that are usually available only online. Some customers even travel long distances just to purchase them in person.
Put on a kappõgi apron and play the role of a tempura chef--great for fun photos!
